The Lesson of the Fly

It is not about seeing the new with old eyes, but about seeing the old with new eyes.

The Lesson of the Fly

For days it has been cloudy, wet, and cold. May was not even warm enough for the flies to fly around.

On the table, a fly crawls unexpectedly, as if dazed, sleepy, perhaps also hungry and thirsty. Where has she slept until now? Perhaps under the protection of a houseplant?

I drink my tea. Watch and make a clumsy movement. A drop of tea lands on the table.

The little fly perceives it and approaches the drop slowly, uncertainly. Yes, obviously she is thirsty! There is peace and quiet in me, just watching.

Where is the nervous reflex of the hand that has snatched and destroyed every (or almost every) nimble fly? Which had to eliminate any disturbance of such a small insect immediately, without consideration, as a threat?

New eyes see the fly drinking. It would be an easy victim. But the fly has become harmless. No, it is much more: It touches my heart! I see the fly with the eyes of the opened heart!

Under the protection of the heart, the fly, God's creature, the miracle of evolution continues to drink in peace. The fly, my new little friend.

This peace spread out from the little fly to my heart. We had a minute together in perfect harmony.

Thank you, little friend! You showed me what it is like to see with the new eyes.
